It has action!! mystery!! adventure!! and religion, huh?

Recently I received a pretty neat book to review. Independently printed and written by a teenager! You can read all about the book, printing company, and story of the author at the website for Media Angels (the publisher) but allow me to give you my opinion. There is series of three books, and I reviewed only one, ‘The Missing Link- FOUND!’ The basis of the story is a set of Christian teenagers who are involved in quite a suspenseful event, they are in a FBI high speed boat chase, active at an archaeological dig, and trying to solve a mystery. It’s almost like the Boxcar Children but even more eventful. Because it is a Christian book it does have it’s fair share of religion, mostly short prayers they say when in danger but there are several mentions of God, Creationism, and one scene of trying to “save” someone, so if religion isn’t your thing the book won’t be either. The story is pretty good. One part at the very beginning seemed poorly written (they went instantly from being on vacation to leaving their house) and left you saying “what??” The story had several twists and turns, but I found it to be mostly predictable. Granted I am an adult, and it is intended for young adults, maybe even “tweens,”  most readers seem to be 10-12.  Because they are Creationist you KNOW the missing link isn’t going to actually be found, so really you just wonder why isn’t it? In general it was a pretty good book in my opinion. I can especially imagine younger kids really liking it. I read it in one long afternoon, spent on the couch because I didn’t feel well, but am also a VERY fast reader.

If you are borderline Christian, then you will easily be able to overlook the obvious religious parts.  It did have some very (true) scientific parts, both for and against evolution. The scientific process of Carbon dating especially. They did try to have both sides well portrayed, but mostly the good guys are creationist and the bad guys believe in evolution or don’t care either way (with just one exception.)

The actual physical book was… well it was a book. No pages fell out while I was reading or anything. The cover was nice enough, the pages were well printed. It’s didn’t scream “independent publisher!!!” or anything.

If you want to give the series a shot, you can buy them individually for $9 a piece, or buy the trilogy for about $25. If you are a homeschooler you can also get literature study guides for $6.50 each. All available at the Media Angels store,  just click on the “store” link.

Helping people teach?

Ummm maybe. In my period of reviewing the Help Me 2 Teach site I must admit I was a little disappointed. Anytime I tried to look up a specific item I couldn’t find it, and usually ended up going to a search engine anyway. Let me explain:

Helpme2teach.comis an amazing idea for a website. It is a subscription based site that after paying to join gives you access to a search  engine for homeschool or teaching material from only specific chosen sites. Essentially it removes the possibility of getting inappropriate results. Unfortunately of the millions of websites out there it only offers a few hundred, (only about 2,500-3,000 total links, not total sites) which really is narrowing down the possible results you will get.

My biggest issues were that after paying to subscribe you still have a high chance of needing to use a regular search engine anyway. Whether it be that you couldn’t find exactly what you needed or that it just wasn’t enough total for a the lesson you intended.  You also have to search every possible word in a theme. For example, when I searched “Fall” I got a good link on pumpkins, which reminded me I wanted to do a whole lesson on pumpkins, so I search pumpkins and found nothing! Not even the link I had found before! When I retried searching pumpkins just today I did get one link, but was not at all happy with it.

Several sites that I did find links to have items for sale, and not necessarily lesson plans or anything useful for teaching. For example when searching any holiday I was often referred to sites that sold decorations for that day, and maybe had a small (emphasise on small) part about the history or meaning of it.

In general I was very unimpressed. The biggest question to me was if it was because I am searching preschool and kindergarten stuff? Would I more happy searching for items for older grades? So I tried it, I searched flower life cycles, dinosaurs,  even geometry worksheets, then flower worksheets. The results were slightly more impressive, but still left a lot to be desired. When searching flower worksheets I got every site that contained worksheets, no matter what the subject. I just asked my hubby to suggest a theme and he chose “the four seasons, and why we have them.” In searching I did just “four seasons” and for this lesson the results were actually impressive. When trying again he chose hibernation, and we got no results. A search for “the moon” brought four results, and one was a math website.

In the end my response is this:

If you are truly limited in time, and don’t desire thoroughly in depth lessons; if you don’t mind not having an extremely well rounded something-from-everywhere type of lesson; then maybe it is worth it to you. I personally found that every time over the last six weeks that I have gone to this site I always left unhappy and headed to a search engine, where I got what I needed instantly. I also like having tons, possibly to many, things for any one theme. If we are doing fall I may want to come home and print a coloring page of a squirrel, or a worksheet of counting pumpkins, and the resources at Help Me 2 Teach weren’t enough for me.

If your homeschool budget isn’t tight. If you are willing to spend $30 for up to two years of service, then give it a shot. I think that depending on the exact style of teaching, and age of students, many people may find it much more helpful then I did.  There are many great sites there, and chances are you will find at least one that you really like.

The potential for this site is AMAZING! Truly it is. I just hope they can reach that potential. I’ll definitely be waiting a long time before paying to use this site and trying it again. For right now, sadly, I’d have to suggest saving your money and going to a free search engine.  I know the owner is trying, they update daily, the links do grow, but for me it just isn’t enough, yet.

Oh so cushy

And soft, and plush, and organic! The Etsy shop Sk Naturals sells (among other things) organic cotton toddler pillows! Good for toddler to age 4 or so, (“so” meaning it makes a great naptime adult pillow too!) the pillow features a soft flannel outside, and organic cotton stuffing inside. The flannel is organic cotton also, so you know your precious ones pillow is pesticide free inside and out!

sknaturals1When ours arrived Blu instantly was feeling snuggly and made it clear how much he enjoyed it. He loves having his own personal pillow (and knowing it’s organic makes me feel better about it too.) It is just so well sized for him, at 12×16 inches, that he just loves to use it. It has it’s place on our big bed right between mommy and daddy’s pillows, and he knows that is HIS spot.

Only when I recently purchased new, non-organic, pillows for my husband and I did I realize how important organic pillows can be. The new pillows had an obvious out-gasing  when I removed the plastic it came it. It really made me glad to know that at least Blu wasn’t sucking in those chemicals in his pillow!

I was really pretty impressed with the pillow. The only downside I found was that it got flat rather quickly. It’s almost a pancake already (after just a few months) but Blu doesn’t seem to mind. It’s very likely that a good cleaning will remedy that.

I absolutely HAVE to mention though the absolutely safety and diligence you need when giving your young child a pillow! Please do not give any pillow (organic or otherwise) to an infant! It is very very unsafe to give any pillow to very young children. Please please do practice extreme caution.

When you do truly feel your older toddler is ready for a pillow though I can’t recommend this one enough. They are available at  SK Naturals, for $25 plus shipping. The good news also is that when the child feels they have outgrown the size, it is the perfect size for travel or sitting on to watch TV! Care instructions are on the site, which reminds me his probably needs an airing out.
