Back to School!

I am not quite through with Etsy yet, but I have an item to review that was set up for review with an agreed upon deadline, so I have to fit this review in now. Plus this is homeschool stuff and back to school is upon us!  After this review it will be more Etsy for at least another week.  Yeah okay so technically Etsy month is over, but I fell behind so I’ll be continuing to finish it up. Now for today’s review:

The Old Schoolhouse magazine and planner! I had a chance to review the digital magazine and full planner and have a lot to say!  If you homeschool I’m sure you’ve heard of them before.  The digital magazine was neat. Personally I just can’t seem to jump on the digital magazine bandwagon, I prefer a paper thing I can carry in the bathtub with me or stuff in the diaper bag, but on the other hand it does save paper (and money since digital subscriptions are cheaper.) Leaving my input on digital magazines aside I decided to pay attention to the text not the format in which I read it. It was well assembled, smooth moving, and a decent read. It was large, quite a few pages to scroll through and I can imagine the print magazine is quite fat. It was separated into sections that contained quite a bit of info in each and were separated well and smoothly. It did contain inspiring articles not just about homeschooling but life in general. It also contained lesson ideas, info and lots of great ads. Sometimes I do read magazines JUST for the ads.

The digital set up was very nice. Easy to scroll through. Nice to use. Really it was THE best digital magazine I have used.  It was very easy to find pages I was looking for or to scroll through randomly. When zooming in to read an article or ad everything was very clear, and you could actually read quite a bit without zooming. When you zoomed it happened quickly and smoothly and it zoomed out just as well. If all digital stuff was this good I would have to reconsider my outlook on digital media.

There is one MAJOR point to consider though, it is a Christian magazine and very strongly so. If you are not Christian, or even just a liberal Christian it may be to religious for you. It is NOT a magazine where you can simply skim over religious items.  If you are religious I think you’ll really love it. It will probably even be your favorite. $17 for the digital subscription or $30 for print for one year. The digital really is just the print version but on your computer, not an inferior or abridged copy.  When you subscribe you also get some GREAT freebies. In retrieving my freebies, which was a bit of work (not enough to take a whole day, but enough to take a chunk of the day) I actually found even MORE freebies! I think the freebies alone are worth the $17 even to non-religious people who may not enjoy the magazine!

I can sum up the planner in just one sentence: I was wowed by the time I reached page 80 of this 250+ page e-book!  The price seems a bit steep at $39 but in reality it’s a priceless resource! Not only does it have tons of forms for homeschooling  but also helpful printouts, theme ideas, AND wonderful home resources!  Large monthly  calendars plus recipes and suggested projects made this a personal favorite of mine. Add in the forms, organizers, articles, and more and this thing is a miracle! It has articles written by various well known homeschoolers that I found to be a great read. Also some great info is gathered into this resource everything from a list of the US Presidents (plus a separate chart with Presidents  AND their First Ladies) to a complete copy of the Constitution!

The negatives? Well I think that some of the info (such as the Constitution) could have been a link to a separate website instead of included. It could save file space (this was a relatively big file) and also not have to be scrolled over by people who simply don’t need it. I can imagine homeschoolers with older kids think it is great to be included, but with me homeschooling for preschool I don’t need to scroll over the complete Bill of Rights every time I try to print a new page for my address book. Which leads to my other negative, the address book pages.  Beings it is an e-book you can obviously print as many copies of each page that you need, if you need five pages for addresses print 5, but for some reason instead of one page to print copies of I counted that they included more then 30! It just seemed really unnecessary to me. I still think it was a great resource. It still had lots of religious features you’d expect from The Old Schoolhouse, but it is easily skipable and not overwhelming. I truly love it. $39 is more then I’d usually pay for any e-book, but I can’t seem to think of anything that they left out of this book! Everything you need to organize your homeschool AND your home all in one place.

You can subscribe to the magazine on their site, buy the planner here, AND even buy lots of great supplies from their store!

I give both of these great resources the Baby Joys Seal of Approval!

A Baby Joys First, and a good one at that!

This is the first time that Baby Joys has reviewed an artist for prints (as in frame them and hang them on the wall prints) and I couldn’t have found a better company to be the first! Lauren Alexander is an amazingly talented watercolor artist who has a great shop full of bright beautiful pictures. The detail in her bold work is amazing. Her work has a bright, whimsical theme and now that I’ve found her I can’t imagine a room, especially a child’s room or nursery, without one of her prints.  Her prices are excellent to, only $5 for a 4×6 print, and only $12 for an 8.5×11! She has a few other sizes too. The prints arrive carefully packaged so no creases and it’s ready to frame and hang.

One great thing is that even on her prints you can see the texture of the watercolor paper, so it’s really hard to tell it is even a print.  The colors are bright, bold, and the print is amazing quality. The paper is nice and thick. It’s one of the best prints I’ve ever seen.

One thing to be aware of, she does sell ACEOs in her shop, and if you aren’t familiar with them just be aware they are very small. The size of a baseball or playing card. If you have a hard time visualizing size the 2.5×3.5 size might seem bigger then it is.

If you’d shopping for great prints for a nursery, or even a dining room, check her out.  I love her so much I’m craving one of her pendants now. She has a few note cards too! I just can’t sing her praises enough, I love her style, and she’s also really nice to work with.

What Did You Focus On?

When I had Blu to focus and get through each contraction I doubled over in paid and hastily said “Dear God get me through this one!” Which is especially interesting because I am not an extremely religious person! Some people go into labor a little more prepared and have a focal point, anything from pictures of other kids to treasured heirlooms. One company made a great piece that not only makes a great focal point and helps you calm yourself, breath and relax but afterwards turns into a precious memento that you can wear daily. Curious? Check this out.  A beautiful, simple pendant that is a focal piece when you need it, and a pretty necklace when you don’t!  Created by Wire Tree Jewelry over at Etsy they have several designs, and not just the focal point pendants.

The focal point pendant is a simple but beautiful and well constructed piece. A small silver circle is stamped with words like “breathe” “relax” or “open,” and a small flower, similar to a dandelion fluff.  The circle is then wire wrapped and hung on a cotton cord. The wire wrapping is very well done, causing the charm to hang well and look very balanced. It also has no lose or pointy pieces to scratch you AND adds a small gemstone bead to the necklace.

The whole piece is just very well made. I really love that it can be a memento after the baby is born. I can think of many times after a baby is born that the mother may need a reminder to relax! Reasonable priced at $25 each.  I’m glad I have one so that when it is time for number two I can focus on something besides the fact that I feel like I’m being run over by a steam roller! Run to the Wire Tree shop and try to overcome that steam roller feeling!  If you’re not familar with how to browse Etsy Shops, look on the right hand side of your screen when on the main shop page, click “Birth Jewelry” and the focal point pendants will be right there. But don’t forget her talents don’t end there, so you might want to browse around more then that.

What a keeper!

I know you’ve seen them, the “versatile” changing pads. The flimsy little vinyl covered pads with a pocket that are supposed to be oh so amazing and portable to change your baby. I’ve seen them everywhere and thought they all sucked. They contain the worlds tiniest pocket that you’d be lucky to fit a newborn sized disposable in. They were flimsy and thin with little to no padding and cheap vinyl covering or stinky plastic. Yuck! THEN I found the Pocket Changer from Baby Goin Places. This changer is  awesome! One side is a thick cushy towel and the other is a nice decorative fabric. The fabric side has two pockets for diapers and wipes. Now like anything it’s not really designed for cloth diapers. BUT I found that you could easily lay one or two prefolds on top of the towel before folding it, then put a cover in the pocket, so it still can hold the essentials without having to carry a bulky diaper bag.

Now if you already purchased to car diaper bag I reviewed before  this goes hand in hand with it. If you have the diaper bag already loaded and in the car, you can easily put just one diaper in here and carry it inside when visiting a friend for dinner or going grocery shopping with your still unpredictable baby . If necessary just run to the car later for a reload. Or use this as a cushy changing pad when changing baby on the back floorboard of the van!

The quality of the Pocket Changer is awesome. So thick and cushy, well made, wonderful fabrics.  I think the towel side uses a nicer towel then any towel in my house! It is by no means a cheap thin towel.  The size is nice to. It’s much larger then other pads I’ve seen.  My Blu is a BIG boy, he just turned 17 months but is moving into 3T clothes! It’s hard to find something for diaper changing that actually goes under half his body, but this does! It doesn’t go head to toe, but had more then enough length for keeping him clean and cushioning him.

Check out the website for the Pocket Changer and more great products (stay tuned for another review of their blankets!) you can custom order one, OR buy a premade from their Etsy store! Only $23.50 for a premade.  This changer is definitely better then any other I’ve seen!

Great Clothes for Kids! (again)

Boy I manage to find a lot of stores that offer cute kids clothes don’t I? I have one more today and this one is a real doosey on the cuteness factor. Over at Boy Girl Boy Girl Designs they HAND dye and HAND paint amazing little clothes. Everything from mermaids to skeletons colorfully painted on everything from bibs to t-shirts. Unlike most stores this one offers a fair amount of boy clothes so girls don’t get all the sweet stuff.

To be honest I was expecting something much different then I received, and not in a good way. I was expecting a amateur painting with 3-d fabric paints, something I’d never actually have my son wear. BUT I received something with wonderful quality, with paints shaded together and very professional looking.  In fact for a T-Rex it’s almost pretty.

It’s been through the wash several times now with no paint fading or peeling. It’s still looking good.

The prices at Boy Girl Boy Girl Designs are really low for the level of quality you get. Really they’re about the same price you’d pay for NON-handmade stuff. About $18 for a shirt, $30 for a dress, and just $15 for shoes. Really good prices for really good products from a really good shop. And now they do have a great shirt for mom too, a skeleton with a cup of coffee!
