Unplug that TV and Go Play!

Any household I’ve ever been to with kids seems to have the same conversation at least once a day, it goes like this:

“We’re Bored!”

“So go play.”

“What can we play?”

And then it happens. Your brain goes blank. What can they play you ask yourself?

Sometimes you just feel struck in a game rut, and need some new ideas. Even the best games get old when you play them over and over.

When I saw this book I was hoping it would solve both those problems, and it does! Unplugged Play by Bobbi Connor is a parenting miracle. All the games and activities are brilliantly categorized. First by age, (1-2, 3-5. 6-10 with over a hundred games per age group) then by type of game. If you have a 3 year old, and need a busy body game, something that entertains long enough for you to switch laundry from the washer to the dryer, or put groceries away, then just flip to that section. Are you planning your child’s eighth birthday? Go to that older kids section of the book, and you can find a party planner! Games and activities for groups, with a suggested party outline. Over 500 pages of activities. And did I mention that they are all 100% electronic free!?!?!? No TV, no batteries, no cords, just plain ol’ fun!

When I first saw the book and read it had ages 1 and 2 included I thought for sure it would have one or two pages of ideas, and the rest of the book would be for older kids, but it has over 100 activities for even the littlest players! I was pretty impressed by that.

There were two small flaws in the book. The first one is that some games are pretty basic. Things that seem like they’d be easy enough to think of without buying a book, but like I said at the beginning we all have those brain dead days. These are perfect for that! What sounds like a flaw quickly becomes a perk. The other is that some of the games are very wasteful, ball up printer paper to use as balls, glue whole sheets of construction paper together in layers, but the remedy is easy for those, use small plastic balls instead or cut the paper in smaller sizes and cut the layers slabs into cool shapes for a mobile! So neither “issue” is a big deal by any means.

While some of the games are basic, some are so creative, like the Snowshoe Shuffle! I found more creative games then basic games. All the supplies called for are cheap and easy to locate. There is even a recommended game cupboard supply list at the back of the book of reach age group! Bobbi Connors must really know games!

I think this book is amazingly fantastic! Only $16.95 (and worth every penny!) at any bookstore!

Can a CD be to Good?

This CD Company sure is close. My Playtime CD’s feature great kid’s music for your child. Why do I bother to say “your child” when we all know it’s for kids? Because they really do make it for YOUR child! The songs include your child’s name! During the songs it is as if they are speaking to your child directly! They also personalize the CD front with your child’s name and a short dedication.

They have over 2000 names to choose from for the music, and can put any name on the CD front. They didn’t have Blu, it is a very rare name, but they did have his other names (he has three.) We went with Benjamin. I love that you can listen to song samples on line, and I did. They really blend the names into the songs, so that no matter how many syllables it sounds great! I listened to tons of samples on line to make sure I was really impressed with all the names, and I was. No matter the name, it blended perfectly! I also searched for names. I searched every name I could think off, family members, friends, future children’s names (even weird ones) and they had them all!

We tried the original, and still best-selling “You are My Friend,” in which the name is said ninety-eight times!!! It is a great CD with music and games to music. Play I Spy, guess farm animals, and even clean up, all to personalized music!

How is the music you ask? It’s catchy! VERY catchy! I find myself singing the songs all the time. You have to hear the song “Look at You.” It cracks me up! I can’t hear it without laughing. I can only imagine how much it would crack up an older child.

Blu loved the CD as well. The second I put it in he was dancing and giggling with the music! Even though he isn’t called Benjamin very often it seemed like he knew it was talking to him!

At first I was thinking of the downside, what if you have more then one kid? You can’t just play it during any ol’ playtime without favoring one child. Then I realized, imagine the great time you’d have during one on one time! Just one parent and child driving to school, the doctor, or playing together? Make that time that much MORE special, but also having a special CD!

They may seem like they are just for young kids (like 6 and under comes to mind) but they have CDs that are great for older ages too! All the way up to 12 years old! They have various Christian music CDs, Christmas CDs, CDs in Spanish, adventures, and even sports CDs! There is something for everyone. You have to swing by My Playtime CDs and grab at least one! I know we’ll be buying more. Just $19.95 for a personalized CD? You can’t beat that price!

I Love it so much, I can’t NOT share it with you! So we have a giveaway! The winner will receive one, personalized My Playtime CD of their choice directly from the company. Just comment here with your name, and email address before March 31st! A winner will be chosen before April 5th and posted here.

The winner was announced on April 1st and was America.

It passed Blu’s Test!

Since the second he was born Blu was a breast man. He nursed within minutes of birth, and spent most of his first day attached.  Since I stay home with him he rarely has to take a bottle. And when he does it treats it just as such. There is a noticeable difference between him drinking from a bottle and him nursing.

When I saw the Adiri Natural Nurser, I was so curious. What does it feel like? How much could it possibly feel like the breast? I mean it IS plastic after all. How would Blu react to it? How does it work?

When it came I tore into the box like it was Christmas! I was excited. Blu sat nearby snacking in his chair, and the most amazing thing happened. He made a face, not just any face, but the “oh boy I see a boob” face! A face I had never seen unless I was pulling my shirt up. He eyes got big and he instantly reached for it!

I took it to the sink to play with. I filled it with warm water, and tested the ease of use. It was definitely the easiest bottle I’ve tried. I squeezed the soft top. Water squirted out, in a way any nursing mom can attest to. I was amazed as well that the soft plastic had warmed up because of the water, and instead of feeling like a cold plastic bottle  it felt more like a breast already.

I noticed too that instead of the classic bottle center hole, it had two holes, towards the sides of the nipple. The nipple itself is unique as well. Shaped different then any bottle I have seen. I have to say I personally haven’t nursed for 24 years, but this has to be as close as I can imagine it being.

The real test came one day when I was out. The Adiri I had wasn’t the right stage for Blu, I had opened the 0-3 month figuring I could give it to a pregnant cousin when I was done the review, but my lovely hubby used it. When I came home my husband was singing it’s praises! While nursing drinking Blu had kicked his one leg up and caressed the bottle! His classic nursing pose! He fell asleep sucking! I was informed that he treated it like it was the real thing!

The Adiri has a very unique shape. Instead of the classic rubbery nipple on a plastic bottle it is a rubbery bottle with a plastic base. The whole top half is a soft polycarbonate-free and bisphenol-A free rubbery material. The bottle is a braced plastic with the same soft exterior. To fill you unscrew the bottom, and fill yer up!  Easy Peasy! You could easily do it while holding a baby with your other arm. For on the go bottles, it also has a unique top. Forget lost parts, this is to easy to lose parts.

Another unique feature is the Petal Vent. On the bottom of the bottle there is a unique vent that doesn’t leak liquid, BUT lets the air escape. I have no idea how it works, but when I put my hand on one side, and blew on the other I could tell the air was definitely coming out!

Blu’s never had a problem with spitting up, but I do feel this bottle would help with that.

This bottle is definitely as close to the breast as plastic can get! I can’t recommend this highly enough. Really.

Log onto their site to find a retailer near you. It available at Baby’s R Us, The Right Start, and more! Retail is $12.50, on the higher end for bottles, but if you have to use a bottle a lot it’s worth it. We all know about nipple confusion, but this bottle will not do that. Make sure that your breastfeeding experience lasts as long as possible. $12.50 is worth paying for that!

And even better! Comment here for your chance to win! I have three Adiri bottles to give away!  One 0-3 month and two 3-6 month! Post in the comments with one reason why you want an Adiri, and your preference for which age range you’d like.  Also state your email address. Feel free to use to spam free babyjoysreviews AT gmail DOT com format. Three lucky winners will get their own Adiri! Comments must be made by March 31st 2008. I will not add you to any kind of mailing list. Your info is safe with me!

The winners were announced on April 1st and were Bree, Molly, and Allison.

Making a Living? No. Not even close.

I’m thrilled at how much Baby Joys has grown lately. We are getting more then 400 hits a month, and it grows daily! Today I decided to take the site growth one step further and got a response I didn’t like. I want to explain how this site works, and why I do it.

I browse the web a lot, to much no doubt, and I find great products. When I find a great product, something really unique, or something I feel truly stands out among the masses I write them. I ask for a review, and yes, a free sample. Every item I review I received the item for free. I do not write the masses. I don’t write every single company I see in a kids boutique. I am selective. I pick things that are off the beaten path, fufill a real need, are about safety, etc.

Today I received an email, that made me feel as though my reviews were being purchased with free stuff. As though anyone in the world could give me something and I’ll give them a rave review. It couldn’t be further from the truth. I have always given positive reviews, because every product I have reviewed is good. It’s the plus side of me hand selecting which products to request.

Any ads you see on the side of the page "This Month’s Sponsors" are given free to companies I work with. I pay for this site out of my own pocket. Everything that is done I pay for it. I’m a stay at home mom I don’t have pocket money.

When I started this site, and to this day, I had a specific reason for doing it. The reason is two fold:

1) To help parents find great stuff, without having to spend as much time on the web as I do. To know that a particular item is great without having to spend their hard earned money to buy it. Kid stuff isn’t cheap, and so much of it ends up in a closet. Tossed aside when it wasn’t what they expected. I want to prevent that. I want to give a true, real mom input on products.

2) To help small businesses. I have owned a small business. It is hard to get the word out. Advertising is hard, and marketing is a big time killer. Finding new customers is no doubt the hardest part of a business. I appreciate small businesses. The companies I review are usually moms. Mom started companies that are trying to make a living. These moms (and dads) want what we all want, what’s best for their kids. I want to help them get it. Their business growth helps us all.

To help Baby Joys grow even more I extended the option of advertisements. This is to pay for the running of the site. Monthly hosting fees, and to start advertising. I have no intention of making an actual income out of this. It is to run this site, and that’s it. Not just anyone can advertise. Advertisements are open only to products I stand behind, products I have already reviewed. Only after I have reviewed a product can an ad be purchased. This is so that I can stand behind the companies. So I know that my readers are not being sent to a website that has less then great service or second rate merchandise.

So to readers- know that my reviews cannot just be bought. I only review products I stand behind. I make no money running this site. I do it all for you, for the moms, the dads, the business owners. The people who just want what is best for their kids. I do get stuff, but I actually give a lot of it away. If we are truly done with it, I give it away. I give it to someone who helped me review it. Or (you’ll see more of this soon) to you, the readers!

I love doing this site, but I can’t do it for nothing. Why would I hype a company, boost their business, make them more money, without something for me? It isn’t about the free stuff, but I wouldn’t do it without it. In the beginning I reviewed a few products without seeing them in person, but not in months. I will not review something I have held in my hand. If I can’t stand behind it, vouch for it, then I won’t write about it. When I review clothing I wash it, more washing then it would usually get, before telling you it’s great. Recently I threw a review item down the stairs. I like to call it "real-life testing."

Someone wrote me and referenced ethics, and "buying" reviews.I had requested a sample to review, and offered the new ad structure for after the review is done. They wrote me about how it isn’t about money, they can’t be bought. They don’t believe is combinding ads with reviews, or articles with ads. It was a magazine, I won’t say which. They talk about how their advertisers have strict rules, only product they trust can be advertised, and so on. My main thought, if it isn’t about the money, if it is about sharing knowledge, why do they charge a very high price for their magazine? Don’t those two things clash very badly. Can’t be bought, but they can be sold?

My site is about knowledge. It’s about me helping others in one way or another. Unlike that magazine, I have ethics AND my site is free.

I’d love your comments on this. If it is a strong comment please email me, so as not to offend anyone or start a blog brawl.
